In the decade since Bitcoin launched, there has been an explosion of cryptocurrencies based on distributed ledger technology. In recent months a Facebook-led association has announced the creation of Libra, a global cryptocurrency. And Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, has recently advocated for the creation of a synthetic central bank sponsored global digital currency. This session will provide an overview of these trends, in particular: the future of digital money, the disrupting effects of new technologies on the banking sector and financial markets and the role of regulators and central banks.
